THE MOON DEVILS
Episode #544 · Written by John Wyndham · Narrated by Scott Miller
A mission to the moon promises discovery, prestige, and a glimpse into a long-dead civilization. Instead, it uncovers something that was never meant to be disturbed. Hidden beneath the surface lies a sealed vault filled with preserved bodies, each one part of a plan that stretches far beyond the understanding of those who find it. What begins as careful examination quickly becomes a race against consequences no one predicted.
The tension builds not through distant mystery, but through immediate danger. The crew is forced to react as the situation shifts from controlled exploration to desperate survival. Every step forward carries risk, and every delay brings them closer to something they cannot contain. The isolation of space offers no refuge, and the fragile safety of their ship becomes the only barrier between order and chaos.
As the threat evolves, the question is no longer what was discovered—but whether it can be stopped. The choices made in those early moments echo through everything that follows, turning a scientific mission into a struggle where hesitation could mean the end of everyone aboard. What was taken from the moon may not stay there, and the cost of bringing it back may be far greater than anyone imagined.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
John Wyndham published early science fiction under several names, including John Beynon and Wyndham Parkes Lucas Beynon Harris, with stories appearing in magazines such as Wonder Stories and Amazing Stories during the 1930s. “The Moon Devils” comes from this period, when he focused on shorter, high-concept narratives that placed ordinary people in immediate danger.
He later gained international recognition with novels like The Day of the Triffids (1951) and The Midwich Cuckoos (1957), both of which explore sudden threats entering familiar environments. That same instinct is present here, where a single discovery leads directly to escalating danger and forces the characters to confront a situation they are not equipped to control.

JOHN WYNDHAM SHORT STORIES
John Wyndham was one of the most influential British science fiction writers of the twentieth century. Best known for novels such as The Day of the Triffids and The Midwich Cuckoos, he also produced a remarkable body of short fiction that explored strange discoveries, unexpected encounters, and the fragile assumptions that shape everyday life.
Wyndham had a gift for introducing a single unusual idea into an otherwise familiar world and then following the consequences wherever they led. His stories are often thoughtful, suspenseful, and deeply human, focusing less on technology itself and more on how ordinary people respond when the impossible becomes real.
Writing under several names throughout his career, Wyndham published dozens of short stories in magazines on both sides of the Atlantic. His work helped bridge the gap between classic pulp adventure and the more sophisticated science fiction that followed.
The stories below offer a glimpse into the imagination of one of science fiction's most enduring voices.
