MESSAGE FROM VENUS

Episode #546 · Written by Russ Winterbotham · Narrated by Scott Miller

Outpost 53 is fighting a battle it cannot win for long. Venusian attackers fill the skies, communications with Earth are gone, and the surviving defenders are already collapsing from exhaustion and poison darts. Every hour brings another assault, and the men holding the line know reinforcements will never arrive unless someone escapes the planet alive.

Captain Paul Bonnet and Lieutenant Bill Riley volunteer for the mission because there is no one else left to send. Their lifeboat was never designed for interplanetary travel, and it certainly was not designed for landing without fuel. Once they leave Venus, gravity itself becomes the enemy as the tiny craft hurtles toward Earth at impossible speed.

What follows is a tense survival story driven by calculations, instinct, and split-second decisions. Russ Winterbotham turns orbital physics into suspense, forcing Bonnet to gamble on a landing method that sounds closer to a miracle than a plan. Every adjustment risks blackout, incineration, or impact at a speed no human body should survive.

Message from Venus captures the energetic spirit of classic space adventure while grounding its danger in mechanical detail. The story moves from battlefield chaos to high-altitude atmospheric flight without losing momentum, building toward one of the most daring emergency landings in vintage science fiction.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Russ Winterbotham published extensively in science fiction magazines during the 1940s and 1950s, appearing in Planet Stories, Amazing Stories, Thrilling Wonder Stories, and Startling Stories. He wrote dozens of stories across science fiction, western, detective, and adventure genres, often combining fast pacing with practical engineering concepts.

Many of Winterbotham’s space stories focused on working pilots, soldiers, and explorers forced to improvise under pressure. Message from Venus reflects that strength perfectly, turning a nearly impossible return flight into a gripping test of nerve and technical skill.
