THE VIBRATION WASPS
Episode #548 · Written by Frank Belknap Long · Narrated by Scott Miller
Human exploration has pushed steadily outward across the Solar System. Colonies thrive on the Moon. Expeditions have reached Mars and Venus. Yet one region near Jupiter still carries a grim reputation. Ships sent toward the Jovian moons have vanished without explanation, leaving only unanswered questions behind.
Richard and Joan know the risks, but neither of them can resist the pull of discovery. Joan burns with the restless drive of an explorer who refuses to let mystery stand unchallenged. Richard brings discipline and caution to the cockpit. Together they guide their small vessel toward Jupiter’s cloud-wrapped frontier, hoping to uncover what ended the missions before them.
Then the instruments fail.
A violent gravitational pull drags the ship downward through Jupiter’s immense atmosphere. The crew braces for a fiery end, expecting molten storms beneath the clouds. Instead they crash onto a solid surface that no astronomer ever predicted. The discovery alone would change humanity’s understanding of the giant planet. But the true shock arrives when the explorers send a camera outside and develop the photographs.
Something enormous is standing in the mist.
The shapes resemble wasps, though far larger than any insect on Earth. Their wings blur with strange energy. Their eyes watch the silent ship. Within minutes the crew learns that Jupiter’s strange inhabitants are not content to remain outside—and that the explorers themselves may have become part of the planet’s food chain.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Frank Belknap Long (1901–1994) wrote across science fiction, fantasy, and horror for more than sixty years. His early stories appeared in the influential pulp magazine Weird Tales, where he became a close correspondent and collaborator of H. P. Lovecraft. Long later published widely in science fiction magazines including Astounding Science Fiction, Thrilling Wonder Stories, Startling Stories, and Planet Stories. His bibliography includes dozens of novels and hundreds of shorter works.
Among Long’s most famous creations is the eerie tale The Hounds of Tindalos, which introduced one of the most memorable creatures in cosmic horror. Stories like The Vibration Wasps show another side of his imagination—combining speculative science, planetary exploration, and sudden extraterrestrial terror. The result is a tense adventure that captures the thrill and dread of early space-age science fiction.
