A. Bertram Chandler (1912–1984) was a British-born Australian science fiction author and merchant navy officer, best known for his Rim Worlds series and the recurring character Commodore John Grimes. Drawing on his seafaring background, Chandler brought authenticity and nautical flavor to his space-faring adventures, often described as “Hornblower in space.” He wrote more than 40 novels and over 200 short stories, many of which appeared in classic SF magazines from the 1950s onward. His works explore themes of isolation, exploration, and the pioneering spirit at the galaxy’s edge. A multiple Ditmar Award winner, Chandler is celebrated as one of Australia’s most influential voices in science fiction, leaving a legacy of adventurous, accessible tales that bridged the gap between golden-age pulp and modern space opera.
