DEAD RINGER
Episode #547 · Written by Lester Del Rey · Narrated by Scott Miller
Dane Phillips has lost jobs, friends, and nearly his freedom chasing a story nobody else believes. Editors laugh at him. Psychiatrists diagnose him. Even the people closest to him see a man collapsing under obsession. But Dane cannot forget what he witnessed during the war, and he cannot ignore the evidence he has gathered ever since.
Every lead points toward the same impossible conclusion. Certain people survive injuries that should kill them. Some disappear only to return under new identities. Others leave behind fingerprints that belong to men already buried. Dane has spent years trying to prove that something alien is hiding behind familiar human faces, quietly replacing the dead while the world dismisses him as insane.
Dead Ringer builds its tension slowly and relentlessly. Lester Del Rey keeps the reader trapped inside Dane’s uncertainty, where every clue feels convincing and every explanation sounds reasonable. The story never depends on giant battles or elaborate technology. Instead, it turns fear inward, forcing Dane to question whether he has uncovered a hidden invasion or destroyed himself chasing ghosts.
The result is one of the most unnerving paranoia stories of the late 1940s. Long before science fiction became crowded with tales of secret infiltrators and hidden impostors, Del Rey created a nightmare where the most dangerous thing in the room may be the person calmly insisting you need help.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Lester Del Rey published fiction in many of the defining science fiction magazines of the twentieth century, including Astounding Science Fiction, Galaxy, and Fantasy & Science Fiction. His early stories ranged from hard science adventures to psychological suspense, often blending fast pacing with deeply personal fear.
Beyond writing, Del Rey later became one of science fiction’s most influential editors through Del Rey Books alongside Judy-Lynn Del Rey. The imprint published major authors across fantasy and science fiction, helping shape the field for a new generation of readers.
Dead Ringer originally appeared in Astounding Science Fiction in 1948. The story stands out for its claustrophobic atmosphere and its early use of hidden infiltrators years before similar ideas became common in popular science fiction and horror.

LESTER DEL REY SHORT STORIES
Lester Del Rey helped shape early science fiction with stories that blend warmth, technical curiosity, and emotional tension. His characters are often ordinary people placed in extraordinary situations, forced to confront inventions or discoveries that quietly change the world around them.
Whether exploring artificial life, time paradoxes, or unsettling biological mysteries, Del Rey wrote with clarity and restraint. The drama builds not from spectacle but from the moment when something familiar begins to feel uncertain.
These stories highlight his range — from poignant reflections on companionship to tightly constructed tales where science introduces unexpected complications.
