PARIAH
Episode #11 · Written by Milton Lesser · Narrated by Scott Miller
Harry Allerton survives deep space only to discover that survival was never the hardest part. His return to Earth is met not with celebration, but with quiet inconvenience, legal finality, and a world that already decided what to do without him.
As Allerton navigates familiar streets and polite conversations, the story reveals its pressure through restraint rather than spectacle. Every interaction tightens the space around him, forcing him to confront the uncomfortable truth that being alive does not guarantee a place among the living.
Pariah is an intimate, unsettling work of science fiction that replaces cosmic danger with social erasure. It follows a man pushed toward a choice that feels voluntary only on paper, shaped by institutions that value stability over individual disruption.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Milton Lesser published dozens of science fiction stories across the major pulp and digest magazines of the 1940s and 1950s, including Astounding Science Fiction, Galaxy, Super Science Stories, and Thrilling Wonder Stories. His work often centered on ordinary professionals—engineers, technicians, crewmen—whose lives were redirected by technological systems beyond their control.
Pariah reflects Lesser’s recurring interest in institutional psychology and social engineering, themes also present in stories like “The Coffin Cure” and “The Test.” Rather than focusing on invention or discovery, Lesser turns his attention to what organizations demand from individuals—and what happens when compliance becomes indistinguishable from choice.
