PINK GRASS PLANET

Episode #530 · Written by Sam Merwin Jr. · Narrated by Scott Miller

Ricardo Webb comes home expecting relief. After years on a distant world, he wants what he remembers—clear air, familiar voices, and a life that makes sense again. At first, everything feels right. The welcome is warm, the world is recognizable, and the future he imagined seems ready to begin.

But something isn’t quite the same. Small changes creep in—subtle at first, easy to dismiss. A turn of phrase, a preference, a style that shouldn’t belong. What once felt distant and foreign has found its way into everyday life, settling in quietly and spreading without resistance. Ricardo begins to realize that the place he longed for hasn’t stood still while he was gone.

The more he looks, the harder it becomes to ignore. The world he thought he was returning to is shifting into something else, shaped by influences he thought he’d escaped. What was once exotic is now familiar, and what was once familiar is starting to feel out of reach. Ricardo is left standing between two versions of life, unsure which one he can truly call his own.

This is not a story about exploration—it’s about return. It’s about what happens when you finally get back to where you belong and discover that belonging isn’t waiting for you anymore. And it asks a simple, uncomfortable question: when everything changes around you, do you adapt—or do you leave again?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sam Merwin Jr. worked as editor of Startling Stories and Thrilling Wonder Stories in the 1940s, helping shape the direction of popular science fiction magazines during a key period of growth. His editorial role placed him at the center of emerging talent and evolving storytelling styles, while his own fiction appeared alongside many of the writers he helped promote.

His work often places characters in situations where cultural expectations clash, forcing them to confront changes they didn’t choose. “Pink Grass Planet” reflects that focus, using a personal homecoming to explore how quickly a familiar world can be reshaped by outside influence.
