THE OTHER NOW

Episode #43 · Written by Murray Leinster · Narrated by Scott Miller

Some losses refuse to stay in the past. In The Other Now, Murray Leinster follows a man whose grief becomes entangled with events that cannot be explained away as memory or coincidence. Familiar rooms begin to behave strangely, and objects once tied to absence return with unsettling persistence.

Rather than rushing toward spectacle, the story tightens its grip through repetition and restraint. Each quiet anomaly pushes Jimmy Patterson closer to a choice that cannot be undone. The more contact he makes across an invisible divide, the harder it becomes to accept a world that insists his wife is gone.

Leinster lets the emotional pressure do the work. There are no heroic rescues or grand revelations, only a steady narrowing of options. Hope grows alongside dread, and the reader is left watching a man move toward a moment where certainty, sanity, and desire cannot all survive together.

First published in the pulp era’s most influential magazines, The Other Now stands as one of Leinster’s most intimate explorations of alternate realities. Instead of treating parallel worlds as abstractions, he frames them as lived experiences, shaped by accident and anchored by love.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Murray Leinster was the primary pen name of William Fitzgerald Jenkins, whose career stretched from the early 1910s into the 1970s. He published extensively in Astounding Science Fiction, Amazing Stories, Thrilling Wonder Stories, and many other major venues, producing work across science fiction, adventure, and speculative thrillers.

Leinster is remembered for foundational stories such as Sidewise in Time, which popularized the concept of parallel histories, and First Contact, a Hugo Award–winning story that helped establish modern first-contact narratives. The Other Now fits squarely within this legacy, focusing not on cosmic scale but on the human cost of chance—showing how one fraction of a second can fracture an entire life.
