THE PLANET OF ILLUSION

Episode #199 · Written by Donald A. Wollheim · Narrated by Scott Miller

Out in deep interstellar space, an experienced crew encounters a planet that refuses to exist on their instruments. Charts show nothing. Sensors remain silent. Yet through the viewing ports, a vast red world looms ahead, impossible to ignore and impossible to explain.

As the ship closes in, the situation turns hostile. Strange vessels appear without warning, matching every maneuver and blocking every escape route. Weapons prove useless. Navigation offers no answers. With time running out, the crew is forced into a decision that feels reckless—but stopping feels worse.

The Planet of Illusion builds tension through uncertainty rather than spectacle. The danger does not come from explosions or battles alone, but from the slow realization that familiar rules no longer apply. Wollheim places trained professionals in a crisis where experience offers no guidance, and survival depends on acting decisively in the face of doubt.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Donald A. Wollheim was a prolific science fiction writer, editor, and publisher whose influence shaped the genre for decades. His stories appeared in early pulp and digest magazines including Wonder Stories, Astounding Science Fiction, and Super Science Stories. In addition to his own fiction, Wollheim played a major role behind the scenes as an editor at Ace Books, where he helped introduce generations of readers to science fiction in affordable paperback form.

The Planet of Illusion reflects Wollheim’s early interest in cosmology, parallel realities, and scientific speculation pushed just beyond accepted knowledge. Rather than focusing on character psychology or elaborate alien cultures, the story centers on a single destabilizing idea and explores what happens when humans encounter it without preparation.
