THE SWEEPER OF LORAY

Episode #523 · Written by Robert Sheckley · Narrated by Scott Miller

On a distant planet written off as insignificant, a single moment shatters a carefully constructed worldview. Professor Carver has built his career on proving that intelligence declines the farther one travels from Earth—but what he witnesses in a quiet village challenges that conclusion in a way he cannot easily dismiss.

A substance capable of healing catastrophic injuries in seconds is more than a scientific breakthrough. It is an opportunity, a temptation, and a test. As Carver and his assistant Fred push for control of it, their motivations begin to separate. One sees profit and survival. The other sees a threat to everything he has spent his life proving.

The pressure builds quickly. The villagers will not share what they depend on to survive, and the Earthmen are unwilling to leave without it. Every step forward tightens the situation, forcing decisions that cannot be reversed and revealing how fragile conviction becomes when it is placed above reality.

Robert Sheckley crafts a story that moves with precision, letting each choice carry weight. The tension comes from watching certainty unravel in real time, until only one path remains—and someone must decide what matters more.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Robert Sheckley published extensively in Galaxy Science Fiction, Astounding Science Fiction, and The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, becoming one of the most recognizable voices in short-form science fiction during the 1950s. His stories often appeared alongside the leading writers of the era, yet stood apart for their sharp reversals and controlled pacing.

He is best known for stories like “The Seventh Victim,” later adapted into film, and “Protection,” both of which showcase his ability to turn a simple premise into a decisive and often ironic outcome. “The Sweeper of Loray” fits squarely within that body of work, using a single discovery to force a confrontation between belief and evidence, and revealing what happens when one is chosen over the other.

★★★★★ “Your podcast has - in the course of the week or so since I discovered it completely at random - become one of my favorites. As a sci-fi fan (and writer), and a literary audiophile, I’m getting all the itches scratched at once! Your narration is a downright pleasure - your voice has hints of the great George Guidall and that god among audiobook readers, the late Frank Muller, and yet is its own sublime signature unto itself. Thank you for doing what you do, and I hope you continue for many years to come.”
— Josh Jennings

★★★★★ “Excellent production quality and content. Great quality and a pleasure to listen.”
