THE UNTOUCHABLE ADOLESCENTS

Episode #331 · Written by Harlan Ellison · Narrated by Scott Miller

A routine commercial mission becomes something far more dangerous when a merchant ship discovers that an alien world is heading toward imminent geological collapse. The data is unmistakable, the countdown has begun, and intervention could save nearly an entire civilization.

But the people of Diamore do not want help. They remember other visitors, other promises, and the scars left behind. When first contact reveals an unexpected and lethal form of resistance, every attempt at assistance only deepens the divide between those who want to help and those who refuse to be helped.

The Untouchable Adolescents unfolds as a tense standoff between certainty and consent. The story strips away the comfort of heroic rescue and replaces it with a far more troubling question: what responsibility remains when the truth is rejected and time is running out?

This is a story about authority without trust, technology without permission, and the quiet horror of watching disaster approach while being unable to stop it. Ellison builds the pressure scene by scene, forcing both his characters and the listener to sit with the consequences of restraint.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Harlan Ellison was one of the most influential and confrontational voices in science fiction, publishing more than 1,700 stories, essays, and scripts across his career. His work appeared regularly in Galaxy Science Fiction, The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, and If, and he became widely known for short stories such as “I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream,” “Repent, Harlequin! Said the Ticktockman,” and “A Boy and His Dog.”

Beyond prose, Ellison wrote for television series including The Twilight Zone and Star Trek, where his script “The City on the Edge of Forever” remains one of the franchise’s most acclaimed episodes. The Untouchable Adolescents captures Ellison’s lifelong refusal to offer easy answers, presenting a scenario where good intentions collide with history, fear, and irreversible loss.
