TRAINEE FOR MARS

Episode #343 · Written by Harry Harrison · Narrated by Scott Miller

A pair of trainee explorers endure dust, danger, and mounting psychological strain as a simulated Mars mission pushes their limits farther than ever before. But when something behaves in a way no simulation should, one of them begins to suspect their “training” may not be what it seems.

Trainee for Mars is a tense, atmospheric adventure about two men pushed to their mental and physical limits in the most unforgiving environment imaginable. Tony Bannerman and Hal Mendoza enter what they believe is a standard simulated mission on a replica of the Red Planet. The “exercise” soon becomes a gauntlet of malfunctioning equipment, water shortages, abrasive Martian dust, sleepless nights, and psychological stress that grows sharper with each passing day. Their mission: survive twenty-eight days in full gear, gather data, perform geological work, and prove they’re worthy of the first real trip to Mars.

But the line between training and reality blurs. The technicians introduce new hazards, the ship begins to fail in unexplainable ways, and the suffocating dust infiltrates everything—including the men themselves. As their nerves fray and paranoia takes root, Tony and Hal must choose whether to trust the program, trust each other, or question everything they’ve been told. When the environment behaves in ways too genuine—too biological—doubt spreads like a crack in a pressure suit. And once doubt enters the chamber, nothing stays safe.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Harry Harrison excels at stories where pressure reveals character. His writing often blends sharp dialogue, fast pacing, and satirical edges into stories that feel immediate even decades later. Harrison was far more than the author of The Stainless Steel Rat; he was a craftsman of short fiction, an editor, and a driving force in mid-century science fiction. Across magazines, anthologies, and novels, he cultivated a reputation for clever problem-solving plots mixed with a grounded sense of danger.

While Harrison is widely celebrated for his humor and action, his stories about training, endurance, and resourcefulness—like Trainee for Mars—show how deeply he understood human resilience. These works demonstrate the tension between technology and human fallibility, the friction of teamwork under strain, and the emotional toll hidden beneath heroism.

His influence continues through adaptations, reprints, and the ongoing popularity of his novels and short stories. And as this tale proves, Harrison could deliver a gripping, character-driven adventure in just a few pages—one that still feels fresh, tense, and brilliantly engineered.
