THE MOON IS GREEN

Episode #212 · Written by Fritz Leiber · Narrated by Scott Miller

A lonely woman trapped in a sealed, post-atomic world catches a glimpse of beauty beyond the lead shutters—and risks everything to follow it. But when a stranger steps out of the toxic green moonlight, desire, fear, and truth collide in devastating ways.

In the sealed, stale air of a radiation-scarred city, Effie dreams of something better—sunlight, open skies, a breath of air that isn’t forced through filters. Her husband insists that safety means obedience. The world outside is poison, he says, deadly dust waiting to seep in and kill them both. But one evening, staring at the green-lit Moon, Effie sees a face watching her from the darkness. Handsome. Curious. Alive. And suddenly the world outside doesn’t seem like death—it looks like hope.

When she opens the shutters and lets the stranger in, her hunger for beauty collides with the harsh rules of a society built on fear. The Moon Is Green is a gripping, psychological post-apocalyptic story about longing, trust, illusion, and the dangerous pull of the unknown. Fritz Leiber masterfully builds tension as Effie questions everything she has been taught—and as reality proves far more complicated than comforting dreams.

The tale explores emotional confinement as much as physical. Effie’s husband Hank represents the rigid survival mindset that governs their sanctuary, while Patrick—the stranger—embodies possibility, temptation, and a wild world reshaped by fallout. Their triangle becomes a heartbreaking reflection on control, self-deception, and the human need for wonder in a world drained of it. Leiber’s prose is intimate, sharp, and haunting as it leads to one of his most unforgettable conclusions.
