THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY
Episode #567 · Written by Chad Oliver · Narrated by Scott Miller
Charlie Buckner knows every fisherman, tourist, and troublemaker who passes through Elkhorn Valley. When another fire tears through a local business, he starts wondering why every new building in town seems doomed to burn. The answer waiting beside Beaver Creek is stranger than anything Charlie expected, and it threatens the future of the valley he depends on.
The One That Got Away by Chad Oliver is funny, clever, and surprisingly sharp underneath its easygoing western tone. Charlie looks like a plainspoken ranch owner, but he understands people better than anyone around him. That talent becomes extremely useful once he discovers that some visitors to Elkhorn Valley are not from anywhere on Earth.
The story turns a quiet fishing trip into a tense negotiation between a stubborn local businessman and a group of alien vacationers determined to keep their favorite destination exactly the way they like it. Chad Oliver balances dry humor with genuine suspense, especially once Charlie realizes these outsiders can erase memories, destroy property, and disappear into the sky whenever they choose.
What makes the story memorable is Charlie himself. He never panics, never acts impressed, and never forgets that tourism is still tourism, even when the customers arrive in a spaceship. While everyone else worries about galactic civilization, Charlie keeps thinking about trout streams, cabins, and who is paying taxes in Elkhorn Valley.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Chad Oliver was both a science fiction writer and a professional anthropologist, a combination that gave his fiction a distinctive voice during the 1950s and 1960s. His stories appeared in publications including The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, Amazing Stories, and Astounding Science Fiction.
Oliver is also remembered for novels such as Shadows in the Sun, Unearthly Neighbors, and Mindswap. Much of his work examined how ordinary people react when unfamiliar cultures suddenly collide, and The One That Got Away delivers that idea through humor, trout fishing, and one unforgettable ranch owner who refuses to be intimidated.

RELATED STORIES - FIRST CONTACT & ENCOUNTERS
The first meeting is never simple.
Distance makes it easy to imagine contact as a handshake between worlds. Up close, it becomes something else entirely. Communication breaks down. Assumptions collapse. What looks like curiosity from one side can feel like threat from the other.
These stories explore that fragile edge where two species try to understand each other—and often fail. Sometimes the danger comes from misunderstanding. Sometimes from knowing exactly what the other side intends.
