BEFORE EDEN
Episode #122 · Written by Arthur C. Clarke · Narrated by Scott Miller
On the cold, aurora-lit heights of Venus’s South Pole, three explorers uncover the first living organism ever found on the planet—a vast, creeping tapestry of crimson life. But even as they study it in awe, an innocent human habit sets in motion a quiet, irreversible consequence they never could have imagined.
The journey to Venus’s South Pole is supposed to be routine—difficult, yes, but predictable. No one expects wonder on a world famous for crushing pressure, lethal heat and storms that have raged for a million years. But as the scout-car Rambling Wreck reaches the end of its route, the landscape begins breaking all the rules: cold-enough temperatures for water to exist, dried riverbeds carved into high ridges, and the unmistakable signs that liquid has once flowed here. Driven by curiosity and scientific discipline, the crew climbs the plateau to investigate the strange thermodynamics of this frozen, emerald-lit region. What they find is a place no human has ever imagined—thin air, boiling lakes, and faint traces of oxygen where none should exist.
Then comes the revelation. Along the edge of a black, mist-covered lake, the team encounters a vast carpet of life—a heat-sensitive, slow-moving, velvet-like organism that glides over the rocks in search of nutrients. Under the green glow of Venusian twilight it appears dark and somber, but in the beam of their lamps it erupts into breathtaking reds and golds. The team studies it with reverence, trying to understand its biology, its behavior, and its place in the ecosystem. It is the first life ever found on Venus, a fragile but thriving species that changes the meaning of their entire mission. But first contact is never simple. Human beings, even cautious ones, leave traces of themselves wherever they go. And in an alien biosphere where evolution has only just begun, the smallest trace can be catastrophic.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Arthur C. Clarke stands as one of the most influential figures in modern science fiction. A scientist, engineer, futurist and storyteller, Clarke helped shape the genre’s identity with his clear, thoughtful prose and visionary ideas. His collaborations, most notably 2001: A Space Odyssey, demonstrated his ability to merge philosophy with scientific realism. Clarke’s short stories, including Before Eden, remain some of his most powerful achievements: tightly focused narratives in which a single discovery reshapes everything we think we know about the universe.
Clarke’s career spanned decades of scientific advancement, and he was equally at home writing about near-future technology, deep time, alien civilizations or humanity’s place in the cosmos. He possessed a rare ability to make readers feel the vastness of space and the fragility of life. Before Eden captures that sensibility perfectly—an awe-filled exploration of discovery, responsibility, and the unexpected price of stepping onto another living world.
