CITIZEN JELL

Episode #487 · Written by Michael Shaara · Narrated by Scott Miller

Mr. Jell has chosen a small, quiet life on Earth, far from the crowded world that raised him and the people who would never forgive his disappearance. He spends his days fishing, walking beneath open skies, and sharing stories with children who sense that he is different but do not yet know why.

What no one else sees is what Mr. Jell carries with him: the ability to repair almost any damage, cure almost any harm, and erase almost any loss. Each time disaster brushes past his peaceful corner of the world, he must decide whether staying hidden is still the same thing as staying innocent.

The pressure builds slowly and relentlessly. A drought worsens. A family loses what it loves most. A child faces an illness no one believes can be cured. With every moment of hesitation, Mr. Jell comes closer to a line he promised himself he would never cross.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Michael Shaara published science fiction early in his career in magazines including Astounding Science Fiction and The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, where he often explored ethical strain through intimate, character-driven situations. Although he later became widely known for historical novels such as The Killer Angels, his speculative work shows the same focus on personal decision under pressure.

Citizen Jell stands as one of Shaara’s most enduring science fiction stories, not for its technology, but for its patience. The story advances by accumulation rather than surprise, placing one gentle figure in a world that keeps asking more of him than silence can allow.
