Michael Shaara published a small number of science fiction stories early in his career, including work that appeared in Astounding Science Fiction during the 1950s. Though his later reputation rests firmly on historical fiction—most notably the Pulitzer Prize–winning novel The Killer Angels—these early speculative stories reveal a consistent concern with duty, command, and moral responsibility under pressure.
