THE HERO

Episode #542 · Written by Elaine Wilber · Narrated by Scott Miller

What happens when a mission built for danger finds none? On Engraham, the crew of Ship UXB-69311 discovers a world that offers no resistance, no hostility, and no challenge to justify their presence. The result is not relief—it is a slow unraveling. With nothing to fight and nothing to prove, the men turn inward, and what they find there begins to shape every decision they make.

The planet’s inhabitants are courteous, distant, and quietly observant. Their cities are open, their customs seem harmless, and their behavior suggests a people who have left conflict behind. But for the crew, that calm creates a pressure that builds day after day. Small irritations become larger problems, and one absence—impossible to ignore—starts to dominate their thinking. The more they try to rationalize it, the less control they seem to have.

Then one man steps forward with a plan. Confident, persuasive, and certain of his understanding, he takes it upon himself to solve what the others cannot. The crew watches, waits, and places their hopes in his success. What follows is not just a test of his ability, but a moment that exposes how little they truly know about the world around them—and the consequences of acting on that ignorance.

This story builds its tension through restraint, letting the atmosphere tighten before delivering a sudden and decisive turn. It is not a tale of survival against an enemy, but of misjudgment in a place where the danger was never what the crew expected.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Elaine Wilber contributed short fiction to mid-20th century science fiction magazines, where her work stood out for its sharp tone and focus on human behavior under pressure. “The Hero” reflects her ability to combine satire with a controlled narrative setup, leading readers toward an outcome that feels both surprising and inevitable.

Her stories often place characters in situations where confidence outpaces understanding, and where small assumptions lead to major consequences. In “The Hero,” that approach is on full display, using a single expedition to reveal how quickly control can slip away when no one questions the premise they are working from.
