THE MONSTER THAT THREATENED THE UNIVERSE
Episode #37 · Written by Russ Winterbotham · Narrated by Scott Miller
A peaceful universe has solved its greatest flaw by removing it entirely. Crime, violence, and dissent no longer exist—not because they were defeated, but because individuality itself was erased. Earth functions smoothly, efficiently, and without argument. When ships begin vanishing inside a cosmic abyss guarded by a living world, that fragile stability is suddenly at risk.
The creature known as Limio does not see itself as evil or hostile. It kills because it must, grows because it cannot stop, and guards its domain with absolute certainty. Weapons fail. Reason collapses. Humanity’s usual answers offer no leverage at all. The only person capable of confronting Limio is a man who stands outside the system that created this quiet universe.
Marmaduke Karns is the last true original thinker alive, preserved by an illegal antidote to enforced conformity. Officially a criminal, he is quietly sent on a mission no one expects him to survive. If he succeeds, Earth may be saved. If he fails, the universe may belong to a single expanding mind. Either way, the world that sent him cannot remain unchanged.
The Monster That Threatened the Universe builds tension through argument, ideology, and irreversible decisions. Its conflict is not just between man and monster, but between competing visions of growth itself. The story presses forward until harmony, progress, and survival can no longer coexist without cost.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Russ Winterbotham published extensively in American science fiction magazines during the 1940s and early 1950s, including appearances in Startling Stories, Thrilling Wonder Stories, and Planet Stories. His fiction often examined centralized control, engineered societies, and the unintended results of technological solutions imposed at scale.
Winterbotham wrote dozens of short stories during this period, frequently focusing on systems that eliminate conflict by suppressing individuality—and the disruptive figures who expose the flaw in that approach. This story stands as one of his clearest explorations of that idea.
