THE VOICE IN THE NIGHT

Episode #132 · Written by William Hope Hodgson · Narrated by Scott Miller

A voice calls out across a motionless sea, asking for food but refusing light, distance, or rescue. From the first exchange, something is wrong—not because of what is said, but because of what must be avoided. The stranger’s restraint feels deliberate, practiced, and painful.

As the night stretches on, fragments of a history surface: wreckage, isolation, and a place where staying alive required choices that could never be undone. The tension grows not through pursuit or violence, but through refusal. Hunger presses harder each hour, yet the greater danger lies in being seen.

This is a story about endurance under conditions that make survival itself suspect. Compassion becomes a test with no safe outcome, and distance is the only barrier between mercy and disaster. The horror arrives quietly, carried by a calm voice that knows exactly what it cannot do.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

William Hope Hodgson (1877–1918) built his reputation on stories shaped by firsthand experience at sea, where isolation and vastness stripped away any illusion of safety. His fiction appeared in publications such as The Idler, Blue Book, and Pearson’s Magazine, and his novels The House on the Borderland and The Ghost Pirates became landmarks of early cosmic and maritime horror.

The Voice in the Night, first published in 1907, stands as one of Hodgson’s most restrained and devastating works. Rather than spectacle, it relies on denial, patience, and the slow erosion of the human body and will. It reflects Hodgson’s enduring obsession with what waits beyond the edge of light—and the terrible cost of staying alive when escape is no longer possible.
