He later worked extensively in comic books, writing for DC Comics on titles including Green Lantern and Superman, before returning to prose science fiction in the 1950s.
He won the first Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1953 for The Demolished Man, a telepathic murder story that helped redefine the genre’s psychological depth. His 1956 novel The Stars My Destination remains one of the field’s most influential works, known for its intensity and structural daring.
